Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome, also known as Digital Eye Strain, refers to a collection of eye and vision-related symptoms caused by prolonged use of computers, tablets, e-readers, and cell phones. Many people experience eye discomfort and vision issues after extended periods of screen time, with the discomfort often worsening as screen use increases.

The average American worker spends about seven hours a day on a computer, whether in the office or working remotely. To reduce digital eye strain, the AOA recommends following the 20-20-20-20 rule: take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away and walk 20 steps.

The most common symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) or Digital Eye Strain include:

  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision

  • Neck and shoulder pain
