Eye Examination

Routine Eye Examination (Comprehensive Eye Examination)

This exam is basically checking health of the eyes. Before we assess the function of the vision system, it is important to make sure the eyes themselves are free of pathology. The exam will include dilation. The best way to evaluate the health of the retina (inside lining of the eye) is through an enlarged pupil.

We understand that children may have a fear-response to the dilation drops. For this reason, our doctor strives to obtain trust with the child from the beginning of the examination. The doctor will give the child options on how to get the eye drops in the eyes, which gives the child control over the situation.

The routine eye examination can be done in your current eye doctors’ office. In this case, please sign medical record release form (click here) or have your eye doctor send a copy of the exam record (our office fax number 203-738-0523) for us to review.

Dilation Eye Exam

A dilated eye examination, or dilation, is a procedure in which we instill eye drops to make the pupil bigger in order to thoroughly examine the crystal lens, vitreous, retina and optic nerve of your eye. The dilation examination is to detect the presence of following eye diseases but not limited:  Cataract, Floaters, Glaucoma, Macular degeneration, Diabetic retinopathy, Retinal detachment.

These drops are safe, and the most common side effects are blurry vision when reading up-close and light sensitivity for a couple of hours. Certain conditions such as pregnancy, forms of glaucoma, or allergies to the dilating eye drops make it unsafe to dilate, so the doctor will always determine whether it is safe to proceed with the procedure.

All our patients are recommended to have the procedure done on their first visit. Depending on the health of your eye, a dilated eye examination will typically be done annually, and may be required more frequently than that if any high-risk conditions are detected. Individuals with good overall health and no known eye conditions may have a dilated exam every 2 years as recommended by the doctor. It is standard of care for anybody with diabetes to be dilated at least annually.

Sensorimotor Examination (Functional Vision Exam)

80 % learning is from vision. Having efficient vision skills is essential for children and adults. During this exam, we measure

  • Eye movement,
  • Alignment of two eyes,
  • Focusing skills of the eye(s): flexibility of switching near to far
  • Depth perception.
  •  Eye-teaming skills:  Flexibility and Range

These tests are recommended to all our patients with vision complaints (click here for symptoms check), who come to our office for help. The results from these testing will let us know what the best treatment options are for our patients, whether it is prescription glasses or contact lenses, prism lenses, vision therapy, eye-muscle surgery or combination of those options.
