Lenses Based Therapy
Lenses to optometrists are like medication to medical physicians. The therapeutic power of lenses on our brain and body should not be underestimated. Glasses are not only to help with visual acuity. Any lenses have the potential to influence brain function. In our office, we take the refraction very seriously (Refraction is the medical procedure to determine the lens prescription).
Lenses bend light towards different parts of the retina, which is connected to various areas of the brain. By directing light to specific areas of the retina, we can modulate brain function. In our office, we prescribe a range of lenses, such as small amount of plus lenses or prisms or cylinders or tints or occlusion for stress relief, optimizing VOR (vestibulo-ocular reflex) gain for dizziness, improving posture, and also for neuromodulation.
The therapeutic effect of lens prescriptions is often overlooked by both doctors and patients. Many patients don’t give lens prescriptions the same level of importance as medication prescriptions. They may not realize that poorly made glasses online can introduce unwanted prisms, leading to serious physical symptoms like headaches, dizziness, anxiety, and ultimately, changes in brain function. For this reason, purchasing glasses online, particularly lenses—is strongly discouraged, as it can negatively affect brain health and overall well-being.
